1: For horticulture:

Perlite is a super light weight potting media that is clean and easy to use as well as environmentally friendly, offering many advantages allowing you to get the very best from your plants, nurturing them and helping them grow healthy and strong. The unique properties of perlite provides for excellent aeration and drainage while still ensuring good water retention.

Clients who used perlite in horticulture has the following results:

• Soil structure is improved due to the near ideal air-water relationship that is developed in the growing media.
• The air holding capacity of the soil is increased and adequate drainage is assured.
• Over watering and under watering losses are reduced due to the surface structure of the particle that retains 3 or 4 times its weight in water without penetrating the particle. Excess water will drain off.
• Cracking and crusting of soil surface is reduced or prevented.
• Soil compaction is prevented.
• A more even distribution of the root system is made possible throughout the entire growing media.

2: For insulation:

The unique properties of perlite have found wide acceptance in the insulating of cryogenic low temperature storage tanks (particularly for the storage of LNG), in shipping containers, cold boxes (Air Separation Units), test chambers and in food processing.

There are many different types of design concepts for low temperature and cryogenic storage vessels.

However, most are double wall construction with the annulus filled with expanded perlite.

• Perlite insulation exhibits low thermal conductivity and has excellent thermal properties.
• Low cost, easy to handle and install.
• Non-combustible, meeting fire regulations and therefore lowers insurance rates.
• Does not shrink, swell, warp or slump.
• Inorganic material that is vermin, and rot resistant.
• As a result of its closed cell structure, the material does not retain moisture.

3: Filter aids:

Perlite is a generic name for a naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock. A unique property of perlite is that it expands up to twenty times its original volume when it is heated to its softening range.

This expansion process is caused by the presence of water in the crude rock. When perlite ore is rapidly heated to above 1200c, this water vaporizes and causes the softened rock to expand.

Tiny glass like bubbles are produced which account for the light weight and exceptional physical properties of expanded perlite.

It is these light weight glasslike bubbles that are milled and classified under stringent quality control conditions to produce perlite filter aids.

This material exhibits a unique, jagged interlocking structure with myriads of microscopic channels affording optimum flow rates and clarities for a wide variety of applications.

Perlite filter aids do not impart taste, colour or odour to liquids being filtered and they are virtually insoluble in mineral and organic acids at all temperatures. Solubility in strong alkalis varies depending on temperature and contact time.

The dry density of perlite filter aid ranges from 100-200kg/m3.

Experience in a variety of applications in many industries has shown that users of filter aids can substantially reduce filtration costs without sacrificing performance by converting to perlite filter aids.

Perlite filter aids can be used with both pressure and vacuum filtration equipment by merely replacing present filter aid.

Plant or laboratory filtration studies will enable the selection of the optimum filter aid to be specified and the dosage that is required.

Of special note is the fact that when perlite filter aids are used with rotary vacuum filters, filter cakes exhibit less cracking than when other filter aids are used.
